I went to Utah Sunday right after church got out to attend the performance of the Community Christmas Choir performance that evening, December 21, at 7:30 p.m., in the Provo Central Stake Center Chapel (The same chapel as our organ recital in November. This event has occurred almost every year for 30 years and is a great way to usher in the true spirit of Christmas with families enjoying an evening of fine Christmas music and narration in the tradition of the yearly "Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols" at Kings College, Cambridge.
A great thanks to Douglas Bush(BYU professor), director; Glade Hunsaker (retired professor and Milton scholar[he was amazing]), narrator; Larry Tomkinson, organist; Claire Rogers, decorator; and the dedicated choir members who faithfully rehearse at 7:00 a.m. every Saturday morning from the first of October through December each year.
It was great listening to the choir and also joining in a great hymn sing with a superb organist. I went with Val and Dan and the kids. All the kids wanted to see, though, was the star on top of the organ spin(See November's post of recital. If you double click the picture and enlarge it you can see the star. It spins and makes a tinkling chime sound when it's on.). They did it on three or four hymns and so Caroline just signed "again" over and over and she got very, very upset when they didn't turn it on upon her request. She was taken out a few times.
It was a great night.
I stayed a couple of nights to help Valerie pack her house up as they are moving to Mapleton on December 26th.
I drove home through Pocatello as Sweetzer was closed. I made it through the falling and drifting snow. It got very scary a few times but I made it in four and a half hours. It's amazing what I do to go sing with a trained organist. It was worth it though.
Merry Christmas!
